Rule of Twelve, Double Take - Ch9 (Passage 4/5)

(… continuing)

Dukk and Marr made their way back through the passenger seating area and down the flight of stairs to the accommodation level.
From the stair door they could hear Annee in the corridor.
“Joantyi you have the first cabin on the right. Larony the first cabin on the left. Bognath and Carltor, all I have left is a twin. Second cabin on the left. Please check your travel lockers are correct and then change into your g-suits. Then make your way back to the dining room. We’ll be starting the pre-departure briefing in 20-30 minutes. Kimince and Trence, the Captain needs your assistance at the load clearance door. Please follow me.”

Dukk and Marr continued down the stairs.
As they got near the mezzanine level they could hear Bazzer and Luna coming back through the starboard passenger airlock.
“Let’s run through the upper levels while Dukk and Marr get us loaded. This room has one of the sets of spare g-suites. The other spare set is in the transport pod bay on the upper level.”
“When do we suit up?”
“After we check the resupply is finished and close the valve panels. It is good practice to finish the sweaty ground work first. Then I like to have a quick shower before suiting up as it can be a good while before the suit is taken off again. Also, I find the first hit of g-juice is easier to handle in a fresh set of inners.”
“Why, what happens?”
“The cocktail is designed to suppress vomiting and bowel movements, and prevent heart failure or strokes during hard burn and also the traverse, but it isn’t perfect or free of side effects. The traverse is particularly ugly. Few manage to come through that for the first time, without saying hello to a sick bag. And most break into a sweat the moment the juice flow is turned off.”
“Oh,” said Luna as they arrived at the bottom of the stairs Dukk and Marr were about to leave.

“How’s the resupply progressing?” Dukk said, announcing their presence on the stairs.
“We’ll have the tanks full and pipes disconnected in about 15 minutes,” Bazzer replied.
“Excellent. We should have the RoboContainers in place by then. We’ll do the pre-departure circle up at that point. The stabilisers are with the load in the clearance area. Do you want to collect them now and get them installed?”
“Sound. We’ll follow you. Be there in five. No point in us hanging around as the observers open the clearance area doors.”

“I see what you now meant by your comment about Bazzer when we were talking to the observers,” Marr shared with Dukk as they made their way down the access stairs to the pad.
“Yes, he doesn’t mess about.”
“Is it really that bad?”
“It can be. Bazzer is also exaggerating a little. It largely comes down to fitness and preparation. Fitness won’t be an issue for you from what I gather. And, Mindfulness practices can help prepare the mind and this reduces the sweating and other involuntary body movements.”
“’Involuntary body movements’, how charming,” Marr added, cringing.

Dukk and Marr stopped at the bottom of the stairs and waited for Annee, Mentor and the observers to join them. They weren’t far behind.
“Thank you for your time once more,” Dukk said as the observers reached the pad floor.
The observers smiled back gleefully. Dukk forced a smile so he didn’t laugh. He had never quite managed to get over the colourful nature of the g-suits they preferred.
“What will we find in the clearance area, Captain?” Kimince asked.
“We have supplies, some components and the load we are carrying to Mayfield.”
“What do we need to do?”
“Firstly, I need you to open the clearance area doors as you did for the passenger pad door. Then I need you to follow me into the clearance area and verify the three RoboContainers. You will need to scan the security seals. You will be required to check them again on arrival in Mayfield to verify that the contents haven’t been tampered with. Once done, I’d like you to go over and lock the passenger pad door, then wait nearby until we have cleared this room. Once done, you can lock these doors too and come back on board.”
“That sounds straight forward, lead the way please.”

Dukk led the group across the pad to the clearance area door.
Once at the door, Kimince used the biometric scanner and then entered some codes into a keypad. Instantly the ceiling height, double doors started to slide open, exposing a large space.
Contained within the large room were five standard robotic crates and three robotic containers. Each of the latter being just over thirteen metres long, two and a half metres wide and four metres high.

Rule of Twelve books to be narrated with the help of A.I.

I am investing in A.I. driven narration to bring the Rule of Twelve books to life.

It will be more than just narration in the traditional audio book sense. The A.I. will enable me to bring dialogue to life with character specific voices. This will create a rich and engaging narration.

Over the coming months I will be in catch-up mode, building the narration for already published material. Eventually, the aim will be to concurrently release chapters in both written and rich narrative form.

The narration will eventually make it to audiobook form for platforms like Audible and Spotify. However, to get it sooner, you will need a Locals subscription. The Locals App works just like your favourite audiobook app. So, you can listen on the go. Becoming a subscriber also helps keep this whole show on the road.

I look forward to sharing the journey with you.

Bradley.

Psychological Safety is a trojan horse

Marr nodded with a wink as she put her hands on the back of Luna’s chair and started to speak.

“Emeelie, what if I have a room with a single door and I put you in it. The door isn’t locked, and you can leave at any time. The room represents a life experience. Now what if I dropped a lion into the room. What would happen?”

“All things being equal, eventually the lion would get hungry and want to eat me.”

   “What are your options?”

“Obviously I would leave via the door, immediately,” Emeelie answered.

   The others laughed.

“Sure, and every other time a lion is dropped into the room you are in, you’d leave too?”

“Yes,” Emeelie said with a hint of hesitation.

“What if there was a possibility that a lion might be dropped into every room, from that moment on. How would your experience of life pan out?”

“Dreadful. Limited. I wouldn’t be able to stay or even enter any room.”

“Right. You’d spend your time running out of every room and miss every potential experience.”

   “Ok.”

“What if I put a chain on the lion and anchor it to the wall?”

“That would work. I would be able to enter the room again.”

“Right. So, the lion would need to be chained down for every room you may enter.”

   “Great.”

   “This is the trojan horse.”

   “How?”

“If I am controlling the lion with chains, I am controlling you.”

   “What! How?”

“I can choose to use chains or not. I can determine which room you can enter and which you cannot. Your potential for life experiences is controlled by me. You allow yourself to be the victim.”

   “Of the lion’s hunger?”

“No, my will. You are allowing me to depower you.”

   “Oh.”

“Yes, oh. Your safety becomes dependent on me or somebody else putting chains on every lion.”

   “Not good.”

“No. What else could you do that leaves you empowered, but not eaten.”

“I could learn to defend myself against the lion.”

“Yes, or even tame it. Put chains on it yourself, so to speak. That way you could go into any room you like, regardless of whether there is a lion in there or not. You’d be safe without anyone else’s intervention. You’d stay empowered. You would experience life to its fullest.”

“So psychological safety is a trojan horse. It puts my safety in the hands of a third party. It depowers. It turns people into victims.”

    Marr nodded and smiled.

Regeneration - Power

Dukk opened his eyes. It was dark.

“A dream. It must have been a dream,” he muttered as he tried to fathom where he was. He tried to digest the pre-dawn excursion with Craig.

He swung himself out of bed. Marr was gone.

   He checked the time. Mid-afternoon.

Regeneration - New ground

“What in the world is going on?” Craig demanded as the doors to the south banqueting hall, closed behind them.

Dukk, Marr and Emeelie stood before him. Beyond was the atrium bathed in orange light from the setting sun.

On the opposite side of the atrium the doors to the north banqueting hall were open. Music and chatter could be heard from within.

The noise from the others disguised the deathly silence that engulfed the four.
